Wagering Requirements Explained — What 35x Actually Costs You
The real math behind bonus wagering: worked examples, house-edge arithmetic, and why a €30 bonus at 6x beats €500 at 35x.

The number nobody explains
'100% up to €500, 35x wagering' means: to withdraw bonus winnings, you must place bets totalling 35 times the bonus. Take the full €500 and you owe the casino €17,500 in turnover before a single cent of bonus money becomes withdrawable.
That turnover isn't neutral. Every euro wagered on a 96% RTP slot loses 4 cents in expectation. €17,500 × 4% = €700 expected loss — €200 more than the bonus was worth. The 'gift' has negative expected value. This is the exact calculation our Truth Engine runs on every bonus we list.
Worked example: big flashy vs small honest
Casino A: '100% up to €500 + 200 free spins' at 35x on the bonus. Deposit €200, get €200 bonus + €20 in spins. Turnover required: €7,000. Expected clearing cost at 96% RTP: €280. True value: €220 − €280 = −€60. You are statistically paying to hold the bonus.
Casino B: '€30 bonus' at 6x. Turnover €180, expected cost €9. True value: +€21 — 70% of your deposit back in real expected value.
The small bonus is objectively better. Casinos know players compare headline numbers, not clearing costs — that asymmetry is the entire welcome-bonus business model.
The multipliers that change everything
• Wagering base: '35x bonus' vs '35x deposit + bonus' — the latter doubles the turnover at a 100% match. Always check which one applies.
• Game weighting: slots usually count 100%, table games 5–20%, and some slots are excluded entirely. Clearing wagering on blackjack at 10% weighting means 10x more actual betting.
• Max bet rules (typically €5): breach it once, even accidentally, and terms let the casino void the bonus and winnings.
• Expiry: 5 days to clear €7,000 of turnover forces high-stakes play; 30 days is workable.
• Max cashout caps: 'winnings capped at 5x deposit' quietly deletes the top of your winning distribution.
When bonuses ARE worth taking
Wagering of 10x or less on the bonus, cash-paid free spins (LeoVegas UK pays spin winnings with no wagering), and rakeback/cashback schemes with zero wagering (Cloudbet's current model) are genuinely player-positive. Everything else: run the math first — our Truth rankings do it for every offer we list, per region.
